Winter resorts are perfect places for holidays with snow
As winter reaches its full swing, masses of skiers get ready to hit the slopes in the Alps and beyond. It is a beautiful and magical time of year, when we often become eager to change air and spend some quality time on the snow, away from our everyday routine and work environment.
Winter resorts are resorts developed for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. In Europe, most of them are situated in towns or villages, in or near the ski area, commonly placed in mountainous area with slopes (ski trails) and ski lift systems.
Winter resorts in Slovenia
Slovenia is the winter paradise on the sunny side of Alps. The white mountains that we can find in the country are amazingly beautiful and offer a lot of great activities like alpine skiing, hiking & mountaineering, ski touring, ice climbing, cross-country skiing, sledding etc. Its winter season lasts from December until March, however the snow in the highest mountains stays until June. It is a place where we can spend perfect and affordable winter holidays on snow.
Slovenian ski resorts are small if we compare them to Austrian or Italian ones, but they are very charming, with the acceptable prices and many good terrains, suitable for beginners. They can be ideal for families, and are not very formal. Most of their staff speaks English, so communication should not be a problem. Let us mention few of the best Slovenian places for winter holidays.
Krvavec, Vogel and Kanin are known to have the nicest views, Cerkno, on the other hand excellent wide slopes, while Kranjska Gora has practically everything and is the liveliest in winter. Apart from alpine skiing there you can do practically everything Slovenian winter has to offer. The Kranjska Gora mountain views are amazing, in the area there are many mountain cottages (which are open during winter as well) and its accommodation & apre-ski offer is the best.
Bovec and Bohinj are also very nice choices, but a lot more quiet than Kranjska Gora.
Bohinj, as the one with the most possibilities and incomparable sights and nature environment, has (apart from Vogel ski resort) a very nice, small local piste for children, good cross-country tracks, endless possibilities for hiking and ski-touring and quite a choice of various on and off- snow winter activities.
Another excellent option for winter vacation is the beautiful Logar valley.
Cerkno and Pohorje (Rogla) are a good choice for family winter holidays however the mountain views are not as spectacular as in some other places. Mariborsko Pohorje is the largest ski resort in Slovenia, located minutes away from Maribor, the second largest Slovenian city. The resort offers 42 km of ski slopes. Ski and snowboarding schools are available, as well 27 km of cross – country tracks.
The popular Krvavec Ski Resort is a 25-minute drive from Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital. It offers 30 km of ski slopes, a snowboard park, night sledding, and a race slope where speed is timed.
Ski Resort Kanin is the highest ski resort in Slovenia. Together with Italian Sella Nevea it creates the only international ski centre in the wider region. The Kanin cable car stops at the altitude of 2,022 meters, from where skiers can enjoy beautiful panoramic views overlooking the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. As the result of its high location, the resort offers the longest ski season in Slovenia, lasting from December to the beginning of May. Kanin has seven ski trails with the total length of 15.5 km. Accommodation is available in the nearby town Bovec.
But let us not forget to mention that Slovenia is a country with relatively short distances, which means that we can also choose from a wide range of accommodation in its charming capital Ljubljana and make daytrips to any ski resort that we like. The city is well known by its Christmas market, marvellous lights, many exquisit restaurants, boutiques, shops and interesting events.
Winter activities
Slovenia is a perfect destination that will surely impress with its wonderful landscape and many things to do in such a small area. Especially Bohinj area is a perfect destination for a family holiday and offers many winter activities for families.
Skiing is just one way to experience the best of winter, but not everyone’s idea of great fun. Luckily, a snow – based holiday can consist of plenty other alternatives. We can try night skiing, ice skating on illuminated ice rinks, night rambles by torchlight or night sledging, after the sun goes down. We can also take interesting walks on snowshoes or relaxing walks in the winter wonderland, treat ourselves with a visit to a wellness centre, go bowling, taste the local cuisine or simply have fun throwing snowballs. If we are the adrenalin type of a person, we should certainly not miss an opportunity for winter tandem paragliding, snow rafting, airboarding, ski touring, skijöring, ice climbing, winter cycling and many more. In Bohinj we can find all of the activities mentioned above and quite some more. After all, it is famous by its countless possibilities of spending some ones free time.
