Every year, surrounded by the beautiful nature of Ukanc, a unique Bohinj story comes to life – the Cow’s Ball, the oldest and most authentic event in Bohinj. Its origins date back to the 1950s, when, at the end of the grazing and tourist season, locals, pastoralists and innkeepers together celebrated a successful summer.
Today, more than 60 years later, the Bohinj Tourist Association is still proud to organise this festival, faithful to tradition and respect for the pastoral life.
The main event is the arrival of herdsmen from higher mountain pastures, who bring beautifully decorated herds of cattle down to the valley and carry “basengo” on their shoulders – all the tools they need for life and work on the mountain pastures. This spectacle is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the entire event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Visitors can look forward to a rich all-day program steeped in the authentic atmosphere of tradition, featuring performances by folk musicians, folklore groups, and a wind orchestra. As every year, special attention will also be given to the youngest visitors, as we will offer a variety of children’s entertainment and creative workshops at the Kravji Bal.
The event will also delight visitors with an excellent selection of local cuisine from the Farmhouse Kitchen—from traditional buckwheat porridge and sauerkraut with cracklings, sausages, and sour milk to delicious sausages that will evoke the authentic flavors of the Slovenian countryside. The highlight of the musical program will be provided by the popular Saša Avsenik Ensemble, whose energy and recognizable melodies will bring together visitors of all generations.
The event will also be made especially charming by an exceptionally rich fair offering, where local vendors will showcase a variety of products—from homemade cheeses and bee products to embroidery, unique jewelry, wooden crafts, and dry goods. The festivities will also be complemented by fun farm games, which will bring plenty of laughter, socializing, and a revival of old traditions.
Free bus transportation to and from the event will be provided for visitors from most villages in the Bohinj area, ensuring an easy and hassle-free arrival and departure. The schedule will be published the week before the event. For parking, we recommend the Danica and Kobla parking lots in Bohinjska Bistrica.
