A celebration of Bohinj traditions and mountaineering joy
Every year, surrounded by the beautiful nature of Ukanc, a unique Bohinj story comes to life – the Cow Ball, the oldest and most authentic event in Bohinj. Its origins date back to the 1950s, when, at the end of the grazing and tourist season, locals, pastoralists and innkeepers together celebrated a successful summer.
Today, more than 60 years later, the Bohinj Tourist Association is still proud to organise this festival, faithful to tradition and respect for the pastoral life.
The main event is the arrival of the shepherds from the higher mountains, who bring beautifully decorated herds of cattle to the valley, carrying on their shoulders a “basenga” – all the tools they need to live and work on the mountain. This spectacle is scheduled to take place at 13:00 and the whole event runs from 10:00 to 19:00.
Visitors will enjoy a rich all-day programme with performances by folk brass bands, folklore groups, a brass band and a selection of excellent homemade food and drinks.
The Cow Ball is not just an event – it is a celebration of heart, tradition and community. Join us and experience Bohinj at its most authentic and joyful.
