The Cow Ball is not just an event – it is a celebration of tradition, alpine herding and community. Join us and experience Bohinj at its most authentic and joyful.
Set against the backdrop of Ukanc’s stunning natural beauty, the Kravji bal – Bohinj’s oldest traditional event – comes to life every year. Its origins date back to the 1950s, when, at the end of the grazing and tourist season, locals, alpine herdsmen and innkeepers would come together to celebrate a successful summer. Today, the Bohinj Tourist Association proudly continues this tradition.
The highlight of the event is the traditional arrival of the herdsmen from the higher-lying Bohinj mountain pastures, who lead festively decorated herds of cattle down into the valley, carrying on their shoulders the famous ‘basengo’ – all the equipment needed for life and work on the mountain pastures. The arrival is scheduled for at around 1 pm , and the whole event is taking place from 10 am to 6 pm .

Alongside the music and cultural programme, visitors can look forward to authentic local Bohinj cuisine and Bohinj cheese, a display of agricultural and forestry machinery, an exhibition of vintage vehicles, a presentation of Bohinj cycles, children’s workshops and entertainment, traditional farm games, and a prize draw with plenty of prizes.
The event will be complemented by a varied range of stalls run by local traders and craftspeople, where you can discover local cheeses, bee products, embroidery, unique jewellery, wooden items, dried goods and other local produce.
Maja Tekavec and Jure Sodja will be hosting the event.
FREE TRANSPORT TO THE EVENT
Free bus transport will be organised for visitors from most of the villages in the Bohinj area to the event and back. TIMETABLE
If you are travelling to Bohinj by car, we recommend parking at the Danica and Kobla car parks in Bohinjska Bistrica and continuing your journey by organised transport.
