Nocturnal visits to the sweethearts is more than just a performance – it is a touching tribute to the old Bohinj heritage, to love stories under the stars and to the witty ingenuity of the boys who sought to find their way into girls’ hearts. This traditional play, lovingly performed by the adult folklore group of the Bohinj Cultural Association, shows in a picturesque and humorous way how boys used to sing to girls under the windows in the villages – hoping that the true heart would hear them and not the watchful ear of a strict mother.
Only the most persistent achieved their goal – a token of love in the form of a cigar and a red carnation pinned to their chest from a girl’s window. And when love won, the stag party followed – a farewell to the free life, in the company of friends and songs.
The Nocturnal visits to the sweethearts was first performed in 1956 and has since been seen by more than 60 generations of viewers. Every year, it attracts locals and visitors from all over the world who want to experience the pulse of old Bohinj, hear the Bohinj language and taste the true folk tradition – warm, alive and sincere.
You are invited to experience an evening when the past comes alive and love is written in folk song!
